Keflavik International Airport (KEF) is the largest in Iceland and the main facility for international flights to the country. There is a local airport close to the capital but that only accommodates internal flights making cheap car hire in Keflavik Airport a popular way for visitors to get to Reykjavik.

The airport was built during WWII by the US military. It has one terminal building that accommodates all flights operated by a total of eight airlines who serve various destinations. There are only two of these companies, Icelandair and Iceland Express who have scheduled services to the UK.

The terminal has two levels with a variety of facilities on each. There is a selection of cash machines and two branches of the Icelandic national bank here. Wireless internet access is available in waiting areas and in the cafés, restaurants and bars where passengers can also enjoy a delicious range of hot and cold meals.

Shopping facilities are very good and feature outlets selling Icelandic souvenirs, crafts and knitwear. The range of duty free goods is extensive and includes cosmetics, alcohol, jewellery, tobacco and electronic items. Car rental at Keflavik Airport is also available and there are two tourist information kiosks. Business travellers have a range of facilities available to them on the second level.

Passengers who have made use of car hire at Keflavik Airport and are heading for the capital, 50kms away, will find the route well signposted. The airport is situated on the beautiful Reykjanes peninsula close to the town of Reykjanesbaer and there are a number of hotels nearby.
