Everything runs like clockwork in Switzerland. Characterised
by banking, clocks and chocolate, the Swiss are justifiably
proud of their pristine and beautiful mountainous landlocked
country.
Lucerne is picture postcard stuff, surrounded
by mountains, lakes, cowbells, alpine villages and meadows
full of edelweiss. It’s a charming town straddling
the Reuss with plenty of 15th century buildings.
The 12th-century Schloss Thun is a historic
museum town strategically located on a defensible hill and
the area boasts some lovely castle.
At the other end of the lake, Chillon Castle
enjoys a stunning location and nearby Montreux
is the centrepiece of the Swiss Riviera and famous for its
annual jazz festival.
The real jaw-dropping scenery is found in the Jungfrau
region south of Interlaken and the impressive trio of the
Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger - dominate
the area. The popular skiing resort of Zermatt is
shadowed by the famous Matterhorn.
Arty Ascona on the shore of Lake Maggiore,
enjoys a Mediterranean climate and imports a distinctive
Italian flavour to Switzerland.
There are few ugly spots in Switzerland, and simply exploring
its spectacular scenery is a rewarding enough holiday. Historically
well-endowed, clean and efficient, it is one of the most
pleasant destinations in Europe. Car hire is popular and
worthwhile,as there are many road routes into Switzerland
from its neighbouring countries, along with numerous, reliable
rail and bus options. Long-haul international flights arrive
in Geneva and Zurich.
Not cheap, Switzerland does however have excellent hotels
and tourist facilities. In the summer touring is popular
with plenty of outdoor options. The quality of Switzerland’s
cuisine extends beyond its famous chocolate!
